Birthday for Mark and Sue

Per Clay, today was the "dark side of 40" for Sue. She turned 45. Mark has now passed the dark side of 40 and is now on the light side of the 50's. He turned 50. They both looked the same as the day before, so it must not be all that hard on either one. Sue decided it was a nice day, so the non-working people (everyone except Clay) headed for Nice.

Part of our trip was on a toll (paege) road. They are like our toll roads around Dallas. You get into certain lanes if you have a "toll tag", and others for cash. When we first got on, the speed limit was 100km, but dropped rather quickly to 70km. They also have cameras that take pictures of speeding cars, and tickets are mailed to the offenders car owner. Someone had knocked the lens out of the one we passed. They are big metal boxes that sit on the ground. They are easily accessed.

We started on the boardwalk and worked our way through the market (flowers, dishes, fruit, etc). You could buy a bouquet of lillies and roses, about 30 flowers in all, for 30 Euro. That is one thing that is cheap here, the flowers. The fresh veggies and fruit are very fresh and so good. It was as we were leaving the market to take a tour that I decided people get feisty when they get old.

Sue decided to prove she was still young by trying to make the rest of us feel old. She led us up 80 stairs for us to reach a hill with a street that we then proceeded to climb. Anyway, the entire day was spent getting to the top of a mountain to see the view. It was not an easy walk, but it was soooo worth it. The view was fantastic. Below are a few pictures.

We got home and Clay soon arrived and we all went out to dinner at Elephant pizza. The guys were gonna walk, but it started raining so all 6 of us got into our rented car which seats 5. Gary had the pleasure of riding in the trunk area. Dinner was fantastic. Connie and Gary ordered a salad with duck meat and duck livers on it. They said it was good, but it was noted that they didn't eat the entire salad. Service was fantastic, and the person eating next to us was Brittish. As he left, he gave Clay his card with his name and e-mail address on it. There are quite a few Britts here, but who knew it would be so easy to meet them (ha!). Just as we started to leave the restaurant, we did notice the beautiful rainbow that God surely sent for Sue and Mark to celebrate their birthdays. We couldn't resist taking a picture of it.

We came home and the birthday kids opened their gifts and cards. It was a great night. Did I forget to mention that we had a few bottles of wine to celebrate? One other note. It is no longer true that they do not put sulphites in their wine. It is on all the bottles that are put out by the bigger wine companies. There is nothing on the smaller companies or house wines except for the type of wine and the name of the establishment. We have also found that you can actually buy some good wines for around 3 eruos. We try to stay away from the cheap stuff, but once tried a 1.80 euro wine that wasn't all that bad.

Got to quit blogging right now and add a few pictures. Clay is making gopher for breakfast. I'm sure it will be a moment to remember. We'll blog about it later. Sorry the pictures are not in order (like they've been so great in the past).

a bientot!
