Another good day in Le Rouret. We all got up and started around 8 am. Clay took James to the airport for his flight back to the USA. (We'll all miss his company....he was a hoot!) The rest of us packed our back packs and headed for Cannes. We saw the set up for the film festival that starts in a couple of weeks. The red carpet this year will be red. (Yeah... not much to get excited about.)
We took a boat out of Cannes and headed for the island of St. Margarite. This is the location of a fort that was once a prison. The view was impossible to describe. We toured it, discovered a church and a cemetry. That part was beautiful but depressing. Enough sad stuff.... we started hiking to the other side of the island. We hiked under eucalyptus trees that were several hundred years old. Then we stopped and had a picnic lunch. Peanut butter sandwiches, is that exotic island fare or what? After lunch, the gang split up. Sue, Mark and Sheila headed for the other side of the island, and Connie and Gary headed to the bird sanctuary. 10 minutes later, it started pouring rain. Sue, Mark and Sheila were prepared, they had poncho's and just hiked faster back to the boat dock.
Not Connie and Gary. Once it started raining, Gary suggested a short cut back to the boat dock. They found themselves at the bottom of the fort, by the sea. The only way up was approximately 2 million steps straight up to get out. I cannot write what Connie told Gary.... this blog sight is rated "g". Anyway, the rain stopped, and Connie finally made it to the top. Gary even had to stop for a breather at one point. The bird sanctuary was a bummer. You can't see the birds for the fences and high brush on the other side.
They all made it back safely back to port. They got out of Cannes just as rush hour traffic started. The traffic is really bad here. The pedestrians have the right away, followed by bicycles, then motor bikes, then anyone else that wants to cut in front of you. It is awful.
Back to doing nothing.......
